The Tango Saloon ‘Don’t Close Your Eyes’

Romero Records is very happy to announce the brand new single for The Tango Saloon, ‘Don’t Close Your Eyes’ featuring vocalist Elana Stone. This is the second single to be released ahead of the band’s forthcoming fourth album, following on from last year’s ‘In Black And White’ (and its stunning video clip directed by Julian Shaw).

The official launch is June 5 at Venue 505 (280 Cleveland St Surry Hills), featuring Elana Stone, and supported by the inimitable gypsy punk trio Mr Bamboo. Book tickets.

The Mango Balloon: Volume 3

Romero Records’ first release for 2014 is Volume 3 of Julian Curwin’s The Mango Balloon series. Developed in 2010 as a stripped-back version of The Tango Saloon, the smaller band has quickly taken on a life of its own.

Each recording has a special guest bringing their personality to the music, and on Volume 3 that guest is Shenzo Gregorio, best known for playing ‘stunt violin’ in his project Shenzo’s Electric Stunt Orchestra (essentially, he flies!). With The Mango Balloon, Shenzo plays viola, and keeps his feet firmly on the ground, though still manages to bring plenty of fireworks to the occasion.

Volume 3 is officially launched March 19 at Venue 505.

Neill Duncan: one-handed saxophone

2014 kicked off with an inspiring story from Darth Vegas saxophonist Neill Duncan, who last year lost his arm to cancer. With assistance from various organisations and individuals, Neill has been able to acquire a one-handed saxophone, and plans to play it at the upcoming Darth Vegas gig on February 8! Incidentally, this will also probably be the band’s last Sydney gig for quite a while. Read the full story here.

The Tango Saloon ‘In Black And White’

Coming soon… The Tango Saloon’s brand new single ‘In Black And White’, featuring vocalist Elana Stone. The song is the first taste of the band’s forthcoming fourth album, following on from Shadows & Fog (2012), Transylvania (2008) and the self-titled debut released on Mike Patton’s Ipecac label in 2006.

The official launch will be May 17 at FBI Social (Level 2, Kings Cross Hotel) with support from Little Fox and La Tarantella.

Neill Duncan Fundraiser

Darth Vegas has organised a fundraiser for their sax player Neill Duncan, who has sadly lost his left arm to cancer.

Darth alongside Neill’s other bands The Ticklers and The Lonely Swingers will play at Camelot Lounge on Sunday, 24th February to celebrate the great man while raising money to hopefully cover some of Neill’s medical expenses.

Neill is embracing his transformation with a grace, humour and enthusiasm to evolve. Currently a one armed saxophone is being modified by a specialist in the Netherlands so that Neill can continue to blow people’s minds with his extraordinary talent of channeling the soul through music.

The Mango Balloon, Volume 2

The 4th release for Romero Records will be ‘The Mango Balloon, Volume 2’ by Julian Curwin – the leader of The Tango Saloon developed the project in 2010 between TTS albums. It is essentially a stripped-back chamber version of The Tango Saloon, distilling all of the elements of the larger band down to various smaller configurations, mostly quartets. The sound is lighter and more laid back, with a style which adds lounge, exotica and continental jazz to The Tango Saloon’s tango/western blend.

The album features 6 members from The Tango Saloon, plus special guest vocalist/guitarist Brian Campeau, who aside from his solo work, has recently been touring and recording with The Rescue Ships, a collaboration with Elana Stone.

‘The Mango Balloon, Volume 2’ will be launched November 10th at Venue 505.
